Meta Seeks Temporary Use of Intel's Idle Ohio Substation to Power Data Center

Meta, through an affiliate, and AEP Ohio filed a joint application with the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) for Meta to temporarily use an idle substation built for Intel’s delayed $28 billion fab. The deal grants Meta 120MW initially, scaling to 250MW by April 2026 for its data center, with the full 500MW capacity reverting to Intel by 2029.

Context

Meta Platforms is seeking approval from the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) to temporarily utilize an American Electric Power (AEP) Ohio substation originally built for Intel's delayed $28 billion semiconductor manufacturing facility. This strategic move allows Meta to power its nearby data center in New Albany, Ohio, addressing the immediate need for substantial energy capacity. The agreement is a direct response to the prolonged construction timeline of Intel's fab, which is now expected to come online by 2029, significantly later than initial projections.Under the proposed three-year arrangement, Meta would initially draw 120MW of power, scaling up to 250MW by April 2026. This temporary allocation ensures that the substation, which was completed earlier than needed by Intel, does not sit idle. The full 500MW capacity of the substation is slated to revert to Intel by 2029, aligning with the revised operational schedule of its chip fabrication plants.
