Tuesday, March 31, 2026 at 07:56 PM

Japan Display Inc. (JDI) has announced the transfer of its Tottori plant. The company ceased liquid crystal panel production at the site in March 2025. While automotive display development and design activities will continue at a new location in Tottori City, the original plant facilities are being divested as JDI restructures its manufacturing footprint.

Context

Japan Display Inc. (JDI) is executing a major structural pivot away from commoditized markets, confirming the transfer of its Tottori plant following the cessation of LCD production in March 2025. While the facility previously handled liquid crystal panels, JDI will maintain its regional presence by establishing a new dedicated hub in Tottori City to continue the development and design of high-growth automotive display technologies. This exit from low-margin smartphone LCDs is a core component of the company’s METAGROWTH 2026 strategy, which aims to return the firm to profitability by right-sizing its domestic manufacturing footprint. The transition coincides with a broader financial restructuring, including a capital alliance with Ichigo Trust to secure approximately JPY 95.6 billion in net proceeds. These funds are earmarked for debt repayment and the commercialization of next-generation proprietary technologies like eLEAP OLED and automotive-grade 2VD displays. By consolidating mass production at its Ishikawa Multi-Fab and closing older sites like Mobara by March 2026, JDI is shifting toward a high-value, miniaturization-focused business model targeting the automotive, medical, and defense sectors.
