BYD has reportedly developed a sodium-ion battery capable of 10,000 cycles and a 10-year lifespan, featuring operational temperature stability from -40 to +60 degrees Celsius and high-rate charging/discharging capabilities.

BYD has unveiled its third-generation sodium-ion battery technology, marking a significant leap in both energy storage and electric vehicle durability. Disclosed during a February 2026 investor briefing, the new platform supports an industry-leading 10,000 cycle life, vastly exceeding the 2,000 to 3,000 cycles typical of current lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells. The company is backing this longevity with a 10-year warranty, signaling high confidence in the chemical stability of its lithium-free architecture.
The technical specifications highlight a robust operating range from -40 to +60 C, effectively addressing the cold-weather range degradation common in existing battery chemistries. Performance is further bolstered by 4C charging and 6C discharge capabilities, enabling rapid power delivery and replenishment. While BYD has not yet set a firm date for mass market entry, citing demand-based scaling, the company has already established a production foundation at its Xuzhou facility. This breakthrough positions BYD to challenge CATL for dominance in the emerging low-cost battery segment.
