Fujitsu VP States Intent to Commission 1.4nm CPU Manufacturing to Rapidus

Tuesday, December 2, 2025 at 08:38 PM

Fujitsu's Vice President announced the company's intention to commission Rapidus to manufacture the 1.4nm generation "FUJITSU-MONAKA-X" CPU, slated for use in systems like "Fugaku-NEXT." This plan is conditional on Rapidus establishing a mass production outlook for its 1.4nm technology by the end of 2026.

Context

In a significant move for Japan's semiconductor ambitions, a Fujitsu executive announced the company is coordinating with Rapidus to "preferably" produce its next-generation 1.4nm CPU. This advanced processor is slated for the successor to the Fugaku supercomputer, targeting deployment around 2029. The decision provides a crucial first customer for Rapidus and signals a strong government-backed push to build a sovereign, cutting-edge domestic chip supply chain for high-performance computing and AI. This partnership is a major endorsement for Rapidus, but the timeline is aggressive. The startup aims for 2nm mass production in 2027, which is already about two years behind market leaders like TSMC. The leap to manufacturing 1.4nm chips for Fujitsu by 2029 presents a substantial technical and financial challenge. Rapidus has secured over ¥1 trillion in government support but requires an estimated ¥5 trillion for full-scale operations, making its ability to execute on schedule a critical factor for investors to watch.
