Talen is acquiring 2.6 GW of natural gas power plants in Ohio and Indiana from ECP for $3.45 billion. This transaction expands Talen's portfolio of dispatchable power assets, which are increasingly critical for supporting high-load requirements of new data center infrastructure.
Context
Talen Energy has reached an agreement to acquire a 2.6 GW portfolio of natural gas power plants from Energy Capital Partners for $3.45 billion. The deal covers three key facilities located in Ohio and Indiana, representing a transaction multiple of approximately 6.6x projected 2027 EBITDA. This expansion significantly bolsters Talen’s capacity within the PJM Interconnection, which serves as the primary power hub for the global data center industry and the "Data Center Alley" corridor.
This acquisition is a direct response to the massive, non-negotiable energy requirements of the AI and semiconductor sectors. As tech giants seek stable, around-the-clock power to fuel next-generation chips and large-scale language models, dispatchable gas assets have become high-value infrastructure. By scaling its dispatchable generation alongside its existing nuclear assets, Talen Energy positions itself as a critical utility partner for the AI supply chain. The transaction is slated for completion in the first half of 2026.
