In mid-November 2025, former Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger, in his new role as a partner at venture capital firm Playground Global, led seven US deep-tech startups to Taiwan to secure collaborations with its hardware supply chain. The trip underscores Taiwan's critical role in bringing advanced hardware from concept to scale. Key partnerships were announced, including AI-inference firm d-Matrix collaborating with TSMC, Alchip, and ASE on 3D memory solutions, and photonics company Ayar Labs partnering with ASIC provider GUC. With startups like d-Matrix backed by a recent $275 million funding round, these deals signal immediate, high-value manufacturing orders for the Taiwanese ecosystem. However, Gelsinger also publicly warned that Taiwan's "strained energy supply" justifies shifting more semiconductor production to the United States, highlighting a strategic risk for investors focused on the region.
