SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won expects semiconductor supply shortages to continue through 2030 and plans to announce a price stabilization strategy to address the ongoing market constraints.

Context

Speaking on the sidelines of the Nvidia GTC conference in San Jose on March 16, 2026, SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won stated that the global chip wafer shortage is likely to persist through 2030. Chey attributed this prolonged crunch to the explosive demand for High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM), noting that "once you make the HBM... we have to use a lot of wafers." Industry data currently shows that wafer supply lags demand by more than 20%, fueled by the rapid expansion of the AI sector. To address these constraints and broaden its global footprint, SK Hynix is reportedly reviewing a potential U.S. ADR listing and plans to unveil a strategy to stabilize DRAM prices. The company remains a dominant force in the supply chain, currently holding a 57% share of the global HBM market as the primary supplier to Nvidia. These statements coincide with SK Hynix's massive infrastructure push, including a recently announced $15 billion investment in new production lines in Yongin and a $13 billion advanced packaging plant in Cheongju slated for full operation by 2028.
