Sumitomo Electric maintains presence in AI data center optical connector supply chain

Saturday, March 21, 2026 at 12:39 AM

The prevailing standard for optical connectors in AI data centers remains MPO or MT (the core of MPO). Sumitomo Electric, an early developer of these technologies, continues to be a key supplier in this infrastructure segment.

Context

As of March 2026, Sumitomo Electric Industries has solidified its role in the AI data center supply chain by addressing the 7x to 10x increase in optical connector demand compared to traditional facilities. The company currently holds a 14% global market share in MPO trunk cables, a critical high-density interconnect technology. To maintain its competitive edge against rivals like Amphenol, Sumitomo has focused on vertical integration, producing everything from the underlying InP and GaAs substrates to finished 800G and 1.6T optical transceivers. In a strategic move to future-proof its infrastructure, Sumitomo Electric recently collaborated with Corning and AFL to establish the SDM4 MCF MSA standard. This partnership aims to transition the industry toward multicore fiber (MCF) solutions, which offer significantly higher capacity than traditional single-core fibers. By scaling production of CW-LD light sources and high-density connectors, Sumitomo is positioning itself to support the unprecedented power and data processing requirements of Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI) and hyperscale AI clusters through 2030.
