SK Hynix is reportedly establishing an AI investment company in the US with a total investment of 1.5 trillion JPY (approximately $9.5 billion USD). The report mentions leveraging Solidigm for this initiative.
Context
SK hynix is significantly expanding its footprint in the United States by committing $10 billion to establish a dedicated AI division and advanced manufacturing infrastructure. This strategy centers on the formation of AI Company (AI Co.), a new entity created through the restructuring of its Solidigm subsidiary. The unit will focus on delivering optimized AI systems and data center solutions, leveraging the firm’s global leadership in high-bandwidth memory to meet surging demand from technology giants like Microsoft and Google.
The investment also fuels a $3.87 billion advanced packaging facility in Indiana, which recently secured $458 million in federal grants through the CHIPS Act. This site is vital for the semiconductor supply chain, with mass production of next-generation chips scheduled to begin by 2028. These components are critical for NVIDIA, where SK hynix currently maintains a dominant 70% market share. Reshoring these high-value processes solidifies the company’s role as a primary supplier for the infrastructure powering the next era of generative AI.
