Wednesday, November 26, 2025 at 08:06 AM

STMicroelectronics launched its new STM32V8 microcontroller, the industry's first on 18nm FD-SOI technology with embedded phase-change memory, which has been selected by SpaceX for its Starlink mini laser communication system. The high-performance MCU is designed for demanding industrial and space applications, with broader OEM availability expected from Q1 2026.

Context

STMicroelectronics has secured a major design win with SpaceX, which selected its new STM32V8 microcontroller for the Starlink mini laser communication system. This is the industry’s first MCU built on an advanced 18nm FD-SOI process, a significant leap that delivers performance up to 800 MHz using an Arm Cortex-M85 core. The selection validates the technology's robustness for harsh Low Earth Orbit environments, a key requirement for SpaceX. For investors, this win confirms STMicroelectronics' technology leadership and provides a foothold in the high-volume satellite market. The 18nm FD-SOI process, which supports temperatures up to 140°C, also opens doors to other high-value industrial and automotive applications. The chip is currently in early access for select customers, with broader availability for key OEMs slated for Q1 2026, indicating revenue contributions will begin in that timeframe.
