TSMC expands 2nm fab capacity in Tainan to meet surging AI chip demand
Sunday, February 15, 2026 at 09:19 PM
TSMC is expanding its 2nm production capacity due to overwhelming demand from AI and HPC clients. The company has applied to build additional fab facilities in Tainan, complementing existing plans for seven 2nm fabs across Baoshan and Kaohsiung. An environmental impact assessment for the 14.6-hectare Tainan expansion is scheduled for March 26, with construction potentially starting in the second quarter. Key clients including Apple, Nvidia, AMD, and MediaTek are reportedly driving the demand for the N2, N2P, and A16 process nodes.
Context
TSMC is fast-tracking an expansion of its 2nm production capacity in Tainan to address a widening supply-demand gap. Driven by surging AI demand from key clients like Apple, Nvidia, AMD, and MediaTek, the company is scaling beyond its existing seven-fab plan in Hsinchu and Kaohsiung. High-performance computing (HPC) is now the primary revenue engine, with sales jumping 48% to $2.19 trillion TWD. Currently, 3nm and 5nm processes account for over 50% of TSMC's total revenue.
The Tainan project faces an environmental assessment on March 26, with construction slated to begin by the end of Q2. This acceleration supports the mass production of enhanced N2P and A16 processes scheduled for later this year. By scaling 2nm capacity to exceed previous 3nm milestones, TSMC aims to solidify its dominance in the AI supply chain and meet the urgent requirements of leading chip designers.
