NextEra Energy and Google Cloud have expanded their partnership to jointly develop multiple gigawatt-scale data center campuses across the United States, which will include accompanying power generation. Construction is already underway on the first three of these sites, and the companies expect to launch an AI product for grid and field operations by mid-2026.

Context

NextEra Energy and Google Cloud have announced an expanded partnership to develop multiple new gigawatt-scale data center campuses across the U.S., complete with integrated energy generation. This collaboration builds on an existing relationship that already encompasses approximately 3.5 GW in operation or contracted capacity, including the recent restart of the Duane Arnold Energy Center and two long-term power purchase agreements adding 600 megawatts in Oklahoma. The companies are currently developing the first three campuses, with plans to identify additional locations. Beyond infrastructure, the partnership includes a technology collaboration, with the first commercial AI product aimed at enhancing field and grid operations expected to be available in the Google Cloud Marketplace by mid-2026. Looking ahead, NextEra Energy aims to add roughly 15 GW of new generation specifically for data centers by 2035. This ambitious target also involves pursuing additional thermal and gas capacity, including a planned initial 1.2-GW gas plant with carbon-capture technology in partnership with ExxonMobil.
