Following the announcement of Skyworks Solutions acquiring Qorvo, Lumentum has reportedly agreed to acquire and renovate Qorvo's previously shuttered manufacturing facility in Greensboro. This move is expected to repurpose the site's production capacity for optical and photonic components, potentially stabilizing local semiconductor supply chain infrastructure.

Context

On March 26, 2026, Lumentum announced the acquisition of a 240,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Greensboro, North Carolina, from Qorvo for approximately $18 million. This site, which Qorvo had previously slated for closure by 2027 following its pending merger with Skyworks Solutions, will now be retrofitted as Lumentum's fifth fabrication plant. The facility is dedicated to producing advanced Indium Phosphide (InP) optical devices, including ultra-high-power lasers essential for the world’s largest AI data centers. This strategic expansion is heavily backed by NVIDIA, which will serve as a primary customer to secure its supply of critical photonic components. Lumentum plans to invest hundreds of millions of dollars into the site, preserving or creating over 400 jobs. The facility will leverage 6-inch InP wafers to enhance supply chain resilience and is expected to reach full production ramp by mid-2028.
