CNBM has reportedly reached production levels exceeding 100 tons for SYT80, a T1200 grade carbon fiber. In contrast, Toray has reportedly not yet initiated mass production of its Torayca 1200 material, despite completing development in the 2023-2024 timeframe, citing insufficient market demand.

Context

On March 11, 2026, China National Building Material Group (CNBM) announced the world's first 100-ton level mass production of T1200-grade ultra-high-strength carbon fiber. This material, specifically the SYT80 model, features a tensile strength exceeding 8,000 MPa, making it roughly 10 times stronger than conventional steel while weighing only one-quarter as much. The achievement marks a significant shift in the advanced materials landscape, as China becomes the first to reach industrial-scale output for this specific grade. While Japan's Toray Industries completed development of its TORAYCA T1200 in late 2023, it has yet to announce equivalent mass production capacity, potentially ceding the early lead in supply chain readiness. This breakthrough is expected to transform high-performance sectors including aerospace, humanoid robotics, and hydrogen storage, providing a critical domestic supply of "black gold" for China's strategic emerging industries and the low-altitude economy.
