Micron is expected to begin commercial production at its new semiconductor assembly and test facility in India starting in February.

Context

Micron is scheduled to launch commercial production at its semiconductor assembly and test facility in Sanand, Gujarat, by the end of February 2026. This milestone marks the first major success for the India Semiconductor Mission, transitioning from successful pilot runs to high-volume operations. The $2.75 billion project, which includes an $825 million direct investment from Micron, focuses on the assembly, testing, marking, and packaging of DRAM and NAND memory chips for global markets. The operationalization of this facility is a strategic pivot for the global supply chain, positioning India as a critical hub for advanced backend manufacturing. By localizing memory module production, the plant addresses growing demand for AI-related hardware and reduces reliance on traditional regional clusters. The facility is expected to create 5,000 direct jobs and 15,000 community jobs, serving as a foundation for the national goal to become a top-tier semiconductor manufacturing power by 2032.
