The cost difference is rooted in Google's custom-designed system. Its TPU v5p pods can link 8,960 chips into a single cohesive unit using an advanced Optical Circuit Switch (OCS) network. This design dramatically reduces component count; one analysis estimates a 4,096-chip cluster requires just 48 Google OCS switches versus approximately 568 InfiniBand switches for a comparable Nvidia deployment.
