Nvidia reportedly increases control over component specifications in VR200 NVL72 compute trays, impacting ODM profitability

Nvidia is reportedly increasing its control over components in its server designs, particularly for the VR200 NVL72 compute tray. The percentage of components where customization is not allowed has risen significantly compared to the GB300 NVL72, and "ODM-designed" components have been eliminated in the VR200 NVL72. This move is seen as unfavorable to assembler profitability.

Context

Nvidia is centralizing control over its AI server architectures by increasing component integration in the GB300 and VR200 NVL72 systems. By restricting customization, the company is shifting ODMs toward a pure assembly model. In the VR200 design, the proportion of "customization not allowed" components has jumped to 20–22%, compared to 5–7% for the GB300. This trend effectively eliminates high-value ODM-designed items from the compute tray entirely. The financial impact on the supply chain is immediate and severe. While assembly gross margins for the GB200 NVL72 are hovering at 18–20% in 1Q25, they are projected to drop sharply to 6–8% by 1Q26 as the GB300 takes over. This move allows Nvidia to capture more of the total system value, but it significantly reduces the profitability and pricing power of its manufacturing partners over the next twelve months.
