Japan Display negotiates with Micron Technology over potential sale of Mobara plant

Thursday, March 26, 2026 at 03:23 AM

Japan Display Inc. is reportedly in discussions with several potential buyers, including U.S.-based memory chip manufacturer Micron Technology, regarding the sale of its Mobara manufacturing plant. The move signifies a potential transition of the facility from display production to semiconductor manufacturing support or expansion.

Context

In a major strategic pivot, Japan Display Inc. (JDI) is negotiating the sale of its Mobara Fab to Micron Technology as part of a transition to exit high-cost LCD manufacturing. JDI previously announced plans to end production at the Chiba-based facility by March 2026 to consolidate operations at its more efficient Ishikawa site. This restructuring aims to reduce the company's massive fixed-cost burden, as the Ishikawa plant reportedly operates at one-quarter of the fixed costs of Mobara. For Micron, the acquisition offers a significant infrastructure footprint in Japan to support its expansion in high-growth sectors like High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM) and AI-driven hardware. JDI has simultaneously been exploring the conversion of its assets into AI data centers, signaling a broader industry shift toward semiconductor packaging and specialized sensors. This potential deal follows a surge in JDI’s market valuation after reports of a proposed $13 billion fab collaboration between the U.S. and Japan, underscoring the deepening ties in the global AI supply chain.
