JPMorgan finds Chinese WFE companies are aggressively expanding product portfolios
Thursday, April 2, 2026 at 03:05 PM
JPMorgan reports indicate that Chinese wafer fabrication equipment (WFE) companies are aggressively expanding their product portfolios. This diversification is aimed at increasing domestic self-sufficiency in semiconductor manufacturing tools amidst global trade restrictions.
Context
Following the SEMICON China 2026 trade show held in late March, JPMorgan Chase analysts reported that Chinese Wafer Fab Equipment (WFE) companies are aggressively expanding their product portfolios. This surge in domestic capability is a direct response to U.S. Department of Commerce export controls that restricted access to high-end tools. JPMorgan previously estimated these restrictions would impact China's domestic WFE market by $6 billion to $8 billion, yet Chinese firms like Naura and AMEC are filling the gap by targeting nodes at 5nm and below. This aligns with China's broader strategic goal to reach 80% semiconductor self-sufficiency by 2030.
During the event, AMEC Chairman Gerald Yin stated that the company plans to increase its share of high-performance in-house products to over 60% within five to ten years through technological development and acquisitions. While JPMorgan remains overweight on global leaders like Applied Materials, KLA, and Lam Research due to their dominance in next-generation leading-edge tech, they noted that the rapid portfolio expansion of Chinese competitors is effectively resolving many local "chokepoint" technologies. Despite this momentum, a significant technology gap remains in advanced photolithography compared to firms like ASML.
