SK Hynix is projected to surpass Intel in semiconductor sales in 2025, rising to third place, while Samsung is expected to maintain its second position.

Context

According to the Gartner 2025 report, SK Hynix has ascended to the third rank in global semiconductor revenue, reaching $60.6 billion. This reflects a robust 37.2% year-over-year growth, allowing the company to overtake Intel for the first time since 2018. The shift highlights a broader industry transformation led by NVIDIA, which secured the top spot with $125.7 billion in revenue—a 63.9% increase—while Samsung maintained second place with $72.5 billion, growing 10.4%. This reshuffling is primarily driven by the explosive demand for High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), which is essential for powering AI data centers. SK Hynix has successfully capitalized on this specialized market, where HBM sales alone surpassed $30 billion in 2025. As total AI infrastructure spending is projected to exceed $1.3 trillion by 2026, market leadership is increasingly determined by a company's ability to supply the high-performance memory required to resolve critical data bottlenecks.
