Yamaha Robotics joins SATAS consortium to advance semiconductor back-end automation

Tuesday, March 10, 2026 at 10:04 AM

Yamaha Robotics has officially joined the Semiconductor Assembly Test Automation and Standardization (SATAS) consortium. While the parent entity Yamaha Motor was already a member, Yamaha Robotics has now joined independently to focus on automation and standardization technologies for semiconductor back-end processing.

Context

The Yamaha Motor group is deepening its involvement in the Semiconductor Assembly Test Automation and Standardization Research Association (SATAS), with its subsidiary Yamaha Robotics officially joining the consortium. Originally established in April 2024 by 15 founding members—including Intel K.K. and Mitsubishi Research Institute—the association aims to transform labor-intensive semiconductor back-end processes through full automation and open industry standards. This move aligns Yamaha Robotics Holdings and its group companies, Shinkawa and Apic Yamada, with a unified effort to solve global supply chain bottlenecks. The consortium is targeting 2028 for the commercialization of its standardized automation solutions, focusing on both existing brownfield and new greenfield facilities. This initiative is particularly critical as semiconductors are now classified as Strategic Goods under national security frameworks, requiring more resilient and efficient domestic manufacturing. By standardizing the equipment and material handling systems for packaging and testing, Yamaha and its partners aim to meet the soaring demand for advanced packaging driven by the AI era.
